Fostering Independence and a Love of Learning…

Robotics at GVS

TO INFINITY & BEYOND

The Paul Scribner Robotics Lab was established in 2007, as a memorial to former student Paul Scribner. The lab is a physical manifestation of the Green Valley mission: to provide a hands-on educational experience for our students.

The lab is a bright, generous, space where children can spread out to do their inventing. There are computer stations where children can test and program their robots. Equipment is available for every student.

Each group works with one another to design, create, and program a robot to meet a designated challenge.

A robotics class meets in the lab once each week to learn robot construction and programming principles. They learn to build robots using the latest Robotics Systems, as well as principles of motion and gearing, and use of light, touch, and ultrasonic sensors.

Each year, students compete in a variety of robot challenges that include mazes, obstacle courses, races, and soccer. Students have joined competitions at: MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, and RoboCup Junior Competitions (in Australia, Italy, Seattle and Montreal).

With the addition of the Paul Scribner Robotics Lab, Green Valley School is better able to continue its tradition of Robotics excellence.

PAUL SCRIBNER (1975 - 1997)

The Paul Scribner Robotics Lab at the Green Valley School is an ongoing project created by family and friends of Paul Scribner to honor and to remember him in the way that best expresses who he was as a person.

Paul Scribner was a student at GVS from third to eighth grade. He loved this school and thrived here because the environment encouraged his inventive spirit and his creative ideas, while educating him in all the fundamental subjects that he would need to help reach his goals.

Paul was an inventor. He kept a secret notebook of all his great ideas. He made models of things he would invent. One time he attached a sled to a lawn mower and got it to pull him around the yard. He set up his own darkroom so he could experiment with photography techniques. At school he learned about welding, and electricity, and plumbing, and all sorts of things that he wanted to know about. He also enjoyed cooking and learned how to use a knitting machine. Paul loved Green Valley School.

When Paul went to college, he decided to become an engineer. His Montessori background aided him in studying more advanced subjects at higher levels, while also developing progressive ideas for his inventions. All along, he continued to love and spend time with family, friends, and his cat.

In his last year of college, Paul and two colleagues won the annual prize for most efficiently designed bridge. When he graduated from college he moved to New York City and got a great job as an engineer.

Sadly… On October 19, 1997, at the age of 22. Paul passed away from a heroin overdose. It was a devastating loss to his friends, family, and community.

NOTE TO STUDENTS & COMMUNITY: Please don’t be tempted to try drugs, even when someone offers them to you in social situations.
ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF: Does what I’m doing align with my dreams & goals?
